Road World Champs

Innsbruck Austria put on a truly magnificent week of racing. It was my first time racing as an Elite at the Road World Champs, and I must admit I was a bundle of nerves and excitement. Being able to race at worlds as an elite is such an amazing opportunity, as one day I dream of winning the rainbow jersey… and the journey must start somewhere. Even if it begins with two DNF!

My first race was the individual time trial. With no expectations and nothing to lose I was ready to go full gas and see how deep I could push myself, without the fear of blowing up. Unfortunately, I took the full gas notion a step to far, and hit the pavement only 8km in. The hit was hard, and my body wasn’t exactly picking its self-off the ground. Usually when I go down, I jump straight back up. However, this wasn’t the case, and I was dragged of the road. A little embarrassing, as this corner was crowded with fans… at least I gave them some crash action!

The road race was one of the most hard-core courses I have ever raced. 154km long and 2413m of climbing… Didn’t end up doing that as I got pulled with one lap to go, but nevertheless I enjoyed every moment of the race – even the painful bits 😉

This race was another new learning experience. My first-time eating rice cakes (yummy… totally eating them again) and picking up bags from the road side… I have seen this go terribly wrong before, so was a little anxious aha!

Even though I was not able to finish the race, I was able to take so much from it. My positioning has improved so much since the beginning of the year, and I finally feel comfortable moving around the bunch. I was able to actively move around the front portion of the bunch during the first 60kms of the race. Tried getting in a few sneaky manoeuvres… but never quite got away. When it came down to the crunch, I didn’t have the legs to hang with the leading bunch. However, this just makes me even more determined. I can take so much away from this experience and I am so hungry for more racing.

Now, I just need to learn from my experiences and knuckle down on some training before next season!

This opportunity would not have been possible without the support I have received throughout the year. Racing on Team Illuminate has exposed me to some good quality racing throughout the season. Where I have been able to learn and develop myself as an athlete. Also, this whole campaign would not have been possible without the support from the New Zealand Crew. The staff where extremely professional and helpful throughout the week, I could not have done it without them! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to race as I have been able to learn and grow a lot from this experience.
